Course Location: All classes will be conveniently held at the Pierre Elliot Trudeau School,an English elementary school located right across from Ottawa in the Hull sector of Gatineau at 2 rue Millar,Gatineau,QC,J8Y 3N3.  You can find direction at google maps:  http://g.co/maps/83vqy

Post-class Pub: There is a tradition in the ski patrol – “Boots Off”.  This is the moment when everyone is back safely at the end of a long day and we can now take all our ski boots off for the day.  We usually have a post class boots off in honour of this tradition, and the new Mill St. Pub is just a few minutes away from our school.  So do plan for hanging around a little longer after class to join in the camaraderie and social time that makes the patrol experience so unique.

Course Costs: There is a cost to joining the ski patrol.  The fees paid by our members offset the cost of running a national organization and cover our liability insurance.  Thankfully, the Gatineau Zone is incredibly active in the community and raises funds in order to greatly reduce the direct costs to our members.  In your first year, the fee is $195 to cover the cost of delivering the advanced medical responder training course and first aid kit and in subsequent years your fee will lowered to approximately $185.  You will also have the opportunity to earn credits toward this annual membership fee by volunteering at the summer events that we service.  $195 is due before the first course and payment information will be requested after registration is completed above.  As well at registration all new recruits will be offered the option to purchase ‘extra’ but necessary first aid supplies.  These are not included in the basic first aid kit we provide because some people may already have these or have an alternate means to acquire them.  These are:a pair of safety scissors,a face mask, plastic whistle without inner ball, and a pupil gauge. The extra kit is $30 and can be purchased at the time of credit card payment or cash and cheque.

The Canadian Ski Patrol:Partners in providing year round volunteer Emergency First Response Services in the National Capital Region

Ottawa,ON,July 19,2011 – Appearing extensively in recent news photos, broadcasts and on YouTube, the first responders in blue and yellow are members of the Canadian Ski Patrol System (CSPS) from the Gatineau Zone.  These volunteers were among the first to respond from our designated positions along the main stage last night minutes after its collapse.  Extensively trained to the first responder level, our volunteers, who have provided First Aid to the festival for almost 10 years worked closely with Ottawa Emergency personnel and organizers to ensure the highest-quality medical services were available throughout the festival and were prepared in the event of more serious incidents.

We are proud our patrollers’ quick thinking and swift response.  Patrollers in the National Capital Region who strive to make a difference in our community provide first aid year-round,but are best known for our on-hill winter skills, are grateful that the number of injured was minimal and that we were able to be of help.

The Canadian Ski Patrol System (CSPS) is a dynamic not-for-profit organization with more than 5,000 volunteers across Canada, provide services to over 220 ski areas and a growing number of summer events across the country. Sporting our trademark yellow and blue jackets,we are students, professionals, retirees and everything in between!

If you are looking to make a difference in your community,we are always looking for new members.  We are looking for intermediate skiers and boarders, over the age of 18. Members of the Canadian Ski Patrol are trained in advanced first aid skills though one of the most widely recognized and respected first-aid programs in Canada.  No prior first aid is required, but certainly a plus.  We also offer a ski patrol course for medical professionals that is available to doctors, nurses and paramedics who love to ski!

  1. Spring Recruit Course:  (30 April – 12 June 2011)

  4. Instructor Certification Program
All instructors (not AIs) must recertify this year to retain your certification and be able to teach for us.  There will be 2 day-long courses (7 May and 16 Oct) and all will have to attend one of the sessions.  Instructor Trainers Kelly Roberts and Maggi McLeod will be the instructors and coordinations.  Contact them for information and details.  Remember:  ALL of you (us) will have to do one or the other to retain your national certification.

All of the Fall events are in the Calendar Document and are being added to the online Events Calendar, including Lift Evacs and the Returnee Weekends.  We will again have one set of events on the Ontario side and one set at Areas in Gatineau.  More information will be forthcoming from JR Arsenault and Chatal Ferland when we get closer to the Fall period.

The Education Department gang is a dedication bunch and our goal is to ensure we adhere to the highest of National Standards, exceed them where we can and ensure that the learning environment for all Gatineau Zone patrollers and recruits is of the highest standard and quality possible. We owe that to you all and our performance throughout the year in all of our events and at Division and National level reflect the proud and outstanding competencies that you all display each and every day!!!!  Keep up the good work and more importantly, your engagement…..we NEED you all to help teach the rest.

THANKS AND ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!!!!

Gatineau Zone Brings Home the Gold!

Awards Photo

Edelweiss proudly accepts the Quebec Division First Aid Trophy flanked to their right by the Laurentienne Team (3rd Place) and the Vorlage Team (2nd Place). On the right of the photo are the three FA Comp organizers who retired after 10 years of organizing the comp.

The Annual Quebec Division Meeting and the Annual Quebec Division First Aid Competition were held at Mont Orignal this past weekend.  This picturesque ski hill stands alone among farms and quaint Quebec towns south of Quebec City about 120 Kms from the Maine,USA border.

I was reminded of the previous year’s comp and the pride the Mont Orignal patrollers demonstrated when it was announced that they would be next to host.  This being my 4th Division weekend,I have to admit,it was the best organized one of my brief ski patrol career.  Our sincerest kudos goes out to the host patrol for their hospitality and fervent efforts.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that our zone came out on top!  True to Gatineau Zone spirit,Edelweiss brought home the Gold and Vorlage brought home the Silver in the First Aid Competition.  Congratulations to Alex,Josef, and Matt of Edelweiss and Dan,Nancy and Adam of Vorlage.  Greg,Justin and Melanie, the all-rookie team from Fortune, had a respectable finish and didn’t come home empty handed.  Melanie took 3rd in the Slalom, somewhat de-stabilizing the Laurentienne Zone foothold as the fastest skiers in Quebec Division.

The Most Improved First Aid Award –awarded to the zone that shows the greatest improvement at the First Aid Comp over past years was awarded to Gatineau Zone despite our usually good showing at Comp.  This means that despite our Gold last year, all the teams did exceptionally well compared to the other 13 teams present.

The weekend was dampened slightly by the news that John Leu had suffered a mild stroke and was recovering in hospital.  Our thoughts and prayers are with him for a quick and speedy recovery.

Finally, but certainly no less important – our very own Mr. Jean-Marie Philippe was named the new Quebec Division President.  I have every confidence that JM will bring new enthusiasm and some great exposure to the work that we do.  Several very exciting opportunities are emerging for the Ski Patrol in Quebec and we eagerly wait to see what JM has up his sleeve along with the Quebec Executive.

I hope to see you all at the Zone Banquet on April 16th.  Don’t forget to pick up your tickets!
